Beneath The Kebaya

I am currently working on a manuscript to pursue my dreams of becoming an author (other than fan fiction, oh god...) because the days of being a Wattpad writer are long gone! Beneath the Kebaya is a haunting novel I am working on, about inheritance, betrayal, and quiet rebellion, exploring what it costs for a woman to step beyond the life chosen for her.

Set in 1960s Singapore, smoke curls from burning joss paper, carrying prayers meant for the dead, and secrets meant to stay buried. The Joo Chiat shophouse has never been this quiet, but for young Huiniang, the silence of her grandmother's first death anniversary is more than deafening. In her world, where a woman's obedience is shaped by virtue and her silence is survival, the men and women of the household play tango. As her father's health worsens, marriage looms ahead, and political unrest simmers in the city as Huiniang’s carefully constructed world fractures.

A night of violence and flight exposes a truth she can no longer deny: her family’s comfort is built on the very suffering she has learned to ignore. Beyond the marble walls and Peranakan tiles, Shimin survives alongside a fragile sisterhood of sex workers in Keong Saik Road, transgender women who ruled the nights of Bugis Street, and those cast aside by society who come prowling when the sun hides. When their lives collide, Huiniang is drawn into an underworld governed not by respectability but by care, labour, and hard-earned dignity. What begins as curiosity becomes an awakening. Confronted with betrayal, desire, and the weight of generations before her, Huiniang must decide whether survival means submission—or escape.
